Thank you so much for your kindness.

WHO AM I?

I was born in South Dakota and attended a one room day schools on the Sioux Reservations, where Mom was the nurse and cook and Dad was the principal and teacher. The family later moved to Crownpoint, NM where my parents worked with the Navajo people.

I have loved athletics and thanks to Title IX, participated in the first Girls State Track Meet in 1973. This included every school in NM, and I got 2nd in the High Jump Event. Attended UNM for Physical Therapy (PT) and was on the first UNM Track and Field team as well. (Title IX gave me and many women since, an opportunity to participate in women’s sports and other activities. This right must not be taken away).

I earned my Masters in Family Studies at UNM as well. Worked mainly with children through Indian Health Service and Carrie Tingley Hospital, much of the time doing Aquatic therapy and training PT students. I’ve been married to Stewart for 37 years, adopted 2 boys and had 3 other children and we have 5 grandchildren.

Like many NM families, have had experiences with many types of schools, the criminal justice system, behavioral health/ drug addiction, and suicide.

I have a strong faith in Jesus Christ and I believe that He is our only hope.

COUNTY COMMISSION GOALS:

On the Bernalillo County (Bernco) Commission for District 2, I would like to:

1) Maintain and encourage the rural nature of the area including agriculture, outdoor activities through proper Zoning, working with Hubbell House and other community and school programs.

2) Help Businesses to flourish throughout Bernco by reducing taxation and regulation. Support programs to encourage students and adults to value work and foster a good work ethic. One example of a nearly disastrous decision by the Bernco. Commission is an ordinance from the "Air Quality Board", which was so stringent, that it would have shut down many local businesses. That is the last thing we need, after the disaster from the pandemic.. We need to support current businesses and their employees in NM first, then look for others from out-of-state.

3) Provide for free and fair elections in Bernalillo County, including cleaning up our voter rolls, and making sure that changes to Voter registrations are up to date and recorded properly.

4) Continue to support and encourage amazing Bernco. Programs who are severely understaffed, but doing amazing work in stopping illegal dumping and providing innovative programs to help citizens get rid of old tires. Dumping and trash are a particular problem in District 2. Could partner with local gyms for functional and helpful “workouts” which also help the community.

5) For the Metropolitan Detention Center, we need to reestablish programs for churches and other groups to provide teaching, training, Bible studies, parenting classes, civics and other programs which are positive for our community. All programs need to require restitution, and hard work to complete conditions of release. Bernco. needs to focus on true Rehabilitation (including exercise and physical activity), providing hope, rather than so many pharmaceuticals. 5) (Cont.) Re-establish daily community work programs for all inmates, (i.e litter clean-up on highways, work in the bosque, learning business trades, etc.).

6) The Mesa del Sol Recreation area will soon be fully operational and will be helpful to bring in athletes and families for sporting events. Encourage local participation in this healthy lifestyle, by offering special incentives and reduced fees if possible.

7) Don’t increase Property Taxes, since many families are struggling to keep their homes and property. Decrease spending in Bernco./ City of Albuquerque government and programs. Recognize that the financial burden of passing bonds that fund popular amenities is carried only by property owners, and that many are on fixed incomes. Assessing properties at inflated values also causes strain on fixed income property owners, as I believe there is a market adjustment in prices coming soon in the commercial and housing markets.

8) We need to stop being a Sanctuary city and county and bring back the Rule of Law into our judicial system. We need to support efforts to curb illegal immigration to our state, at the border.

9) Provide assistance to families of children with special needs and adults with disabilities in terms of appropriate health care in NM (rather than having to go to other states) and developing a fitness/recreation /sports center focusing on the special needs of this population.

10) Refocus additional Bernco. funds from the homeless and addicted populations to prevention and support of healthy families.
